Baffin Fisheries Donates $50,000 to Nunavut Communities

IQALUIT, NU December 18, 2015 – The Board of Directors of Baffin Fisheries Coalition (Baffin Fisheries) is pleased to announce a $50,000 financial contribution to five charitable organizations sponsored by its shareholders. Baffin Fisheries is 100% owned by five Nunavut Hunters and Trapper Associations (HTAs): Amarok, Pangnirtung, Mayukalik, Mittimakalik and Namautaq.  Each HTA will receive $10,000 to support local community organizations.

The first donation was presented to Tununiq Ikajuqtiit (Pond Inlet Food Bank) by Mittimakalik Board member Leo Mucktar.

“We are pleased to be able to give back to our communities at this time of year,” said Baffin Fisheries President Jacopie Maniapik. “This has been a year of growth and investment to ensure long-term benefits for our communities, but also a good year financially thanks to the hard work of our employees.”

Baffin Fisheries employs up to 200 men and women annually. Approximately 50 per cent of crew members are from Nunavut. Baffin Fisheries produces premium cold water turbot and shrimp from the waters around Baffin Island. The company is involved in developing new inshore and offshore fisheries and conducting scientific research regarding emerging fisheries.
